FAQs

How long can lice live away from the scalp?

1

Adult head lice usually survive less than 24 hours away from a human scalp because they require frequent blood meals.

2

What are nits?

Nits are lice eggs that are firmly attached to the hair shaft close to the scalp. Unlike dandruff, they do not brush or shake off.

What are the signs of head lice?

3

Common signs include itching, a tickling sensation on the scalp, visible lice, nits attached to the hair, rash on the back of the neck, low grade fevers and sleepiness after a good night's sleep. Some people have no symptoms at all.

Can someone have lice without itching?

4

Yes. The itching is an allergic reaction to the saliva the lice secrete when they feed. Like any allergy not everyone reacts. Some people experience little or no itching, especially during the early stages of an infestation.

Can I have nits without live lice?

5

Yes. Empty egg casings never fall out so they can remain attached to the hair long after live lice are no longer present.

Where are lice and nits most commonly found?

6

Nits are most commonly found behind the ears and at the nape of the neck and newly laid nits can be found very close to the scalp.

How often should I check my child’s hair?

In an attempt to find lice at first onset, many experts recommend checking once a week, especially after camps, sleepovers, vacations, or when lice have been reported by your friends or school.

Can men get head lice?

8

Yes. Head lice can affect men and women of all ages.

Can head lice live in a beard?

9

Rarely however it is possible especially when a man lacks hair on his head or the beard directly connects to the head of hair.

Yes and No. Long hair does not attract lice, but it does increase opportunities for head lice to move from one head to another. That's why keeping hair pulled back is a good way to help prevent lice.

11

Can lice survive in swimming pools?

No. Head lice cannot swim, and they do not willingly leave their food source.

12

Do lice prefer certain blood types?

Although all blood types can get head lice some researchers have suggested that once a louse begins feeding, it must remain on a host with a compatible blood type. To feed on a noncompatible blood type could prove deadly. Additional research is needed to help advance this theory.

How do I know if it’s dandruff or nits?

13

Dandruff generally flakes easily from the hair. Nits are firmly glued to only one side of the hair shaft and can only be removed by sliding them down the hair shaft.
